Position Purpose: A professional tutor in mathematics supports learning by providing professional tutoring and academic support to students at all levels of the University. Professional tutors are primarily engaged in assisting students with courses in the tutor's academic discipline, but they also support courses with math-related material across the disciplines. This individual will provide individual and small group tutoring to students in the Academic Support Center. This is a 9-month position working approximately 10-20 hours per week.

Interacts effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and other customers of our service, learns and uses operating practices of the department and Aurora University.

Essential Job Functions:
Provides patient, responsive tutoring in support of any course currently offered by the mathematics department; tutors in support of related disciplines in so much as these disciplines employ math skills.
Assists students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and work on study skills. Other assistance might include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems.
Performs outreach to students in need of additional academic support.
Utilizes technology to monitor utilization of services, provide tutoring, and perform outreach.
Communicates effectively with faculty about course expectations and assignments; responds to faculty concerns and suggestions; coordinates with other Academic Support Center staff members.
Assists the director in fulfilling the everyday tasks of the Academic Support Center, including the front desk, proctoring tests, and helping students utilize campus resources.
Essential Job Requirements:
Master's degree in mathematics required
Experience in higher education strongly preferred
Able to utilize excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen with empathy and respect, communicate clearly, and convey courtesy, patience, sincerity and a desire to help.
Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and faculty, characterized by cooperation, attention to detail, flexibility, reliability, efficiency and personal responsibility.
Able to interact with diverse personalities and populations with respect and sensitivity.
Able to handle testing materials and administer tests with integrity and strict adherence to instructions.
Able to utilize technology including social media effectively.
Ability to work various shifts weekdays during the hours of 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM desirable
Sitting or standing at desk/worktable with student(s); moving about the office; moving about the campus.

Founded in 1893 in Mendota, Illinois, as Mendota Seminary, the institution soon changed its name to Mendota College. By 1911, it had outgrown its facilities and the following year changed its name to Aurora College and moved to Aurora, where its students could take advantage of a thriving business environment and easy access to Chicago. In 1985, Aurora College changed its name to Aurora University to better reflect the magnitude of its academic offerings. Seven years later, Aurora University and George Williams College traditions blended when the two institutions entered into an affiliation agreement that paved the way for a merger eight years later. In 2010, the Woodstock Center opened to meet the needs of students in McHenry County and surrounding communities.
