The Calhoun School, a leading progressive, independent, co-educational day school in Manhattan, seeks a full time Middle School Math teacher to begin in August, 2018. Math teachers are responsible for the development, implementation, and progression of the Calhoun curriculum, and the success of its students. Math department faculty are highly collaborative, and they use the latest research and inquiry-based approaches to challenge their students. We inspire students to problem-solve and strive to provide a positive learning environment in which all students can excel.
Essential Job Functions:
Teaching 7th grade math, developing lesson plans, and collaborating with the math department in order to support the needs of the students.
Creating a positive learning environment for students and inspiring students to hold themselves to a high standard of academics and character
Maintaining anecdotal and assessment records to inform thoughtful, comprehensive narrative reports while assessing students in a meaningful and progressive manner.
Serving as an advisor to a small group of students to help them navigate the unique social and academic aspects of Middle School
Providing differentiated and small group instruction based on the learning modalities of students.
Cultivating a love of math through interactive, joyful learning.
Offering STEAM-related electives for 7th and 8th graders preferred
Collaborating with colleagues both intra- and cross-departmentally to share best practices and ensure student progress.
Attend faculty meetings and conferences as needed.
Maintain consistent relationships with families, including phone calls, emails and conferences.
Engaging in the wider life of the Middle School - for example, serving as a faculty advisor to a student club or chaperoning a trip
Strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with Calhoun’s mission and values.
Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of math-related disciplines.
Experience in designing and evaluating curriculum.
Interest in working in a progressive and humanistic school.
Flexibility and ability to cope with change.
Appreciation for the developmental stage of the middle school child.
Interest and experience in computer programming and/or other STEAM related fields preferred
Bachelors Degree in a related field
Teaching experience required
