This summer, the Academic Achievement Center, in partnership with the Math Department, is launching a Math Readiness Boot Camp in an effort to provide additional support for incoming first-year, transfer, and continuing students in the area of developmental math. The Math Readiness Boot Camp strives to prepare students for the Accuplacer exam and enable them to place into college-level math.
The Math Readiness Boot Camp Coach (MRBC) is responsible for coaching students enrolled in the Math Readiness Boot Camp, focusing on providing them the support and/or skills to help them succeed in the program and ready them for their BSU academic career. The Math Readiness Boot Camp strives to prepare students for the Accuplacer exam and enable them to place into college-level math. Working closely with the Math Readiness Boot Camp Project Coordinator, the MRBC will review and evaluate student's enrollment surveys, interview enrolled students, assist in development of workshop coaching materials, lead 1:1 and small group coaching sessions and attend boot camp workshops to observe, assist and/or advise students on their math goals. Coaching topics may include, but is not limited to, growth mindset, test-taking strategies, math anxiety, confidence and self-efficacy. The MRBC should be comfortable with discussing mathematics and should demonstrate a positive attitude toward math learning. Understanding of coaching/helping skills highly desired.
1.Develop and provide student-centered university-level learning assistance such as: goal-setting and motivation, mindset, time management, test-taking anxiety, test-taking preparation and strategies.
2.Manage a case load of 40-50 students. Assist students in one-on-one and group coaching sessions.
3.Maintain a spreadsheet of utilization data regarding AC&R services as they pertain to Boot Camp.
4.Collaborate with all AAC staff and faculty as needed and/or required.
5.Attend pre-Boot Camp training and participate in regularly scheduled supervision meetings.
6.Perform other professional tasks as assigned by the Coaching coordinator.
1.Candidates must have a strong interest in college student development
2.Candidates may have particular interest in motivation theory, mindset, and test-taking preparation/strategies
3.Experience in teaching, academic tutoring, peer mentoring and/or counseling is preferred
4.Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, personal motivation, and high degree of openness to new approaches and new ideas
5.Demonstrates a positive attitude around mathematics and the discussion of academic success as it pertains to mathematics
6.Strong interpersonal skills
7.Evidence of strong computer skills
8.Demonstrated ability to initiate work independently without direct supervision as well as identify and resolve day-to-day problems
9.Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
10.Ability to adapt according to the fluctuating needs of students and staff
11.Candidates must also have experience and/or ability to work with, and motivate, students from diverse populations (race, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation)
