Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart in Princeton, New Jersey is an independent Sacred Heart school for boys in Kindergarten through Grade 8. We are currently seeking a full-time Lower School Lead Grade 4 Math and Science Teacher for the 2018-2019 school year.
Rooted in the more than 200-year tradition of the Society of the Sacred Heart, the mission of Princeton Academy is to develop young men with active and creative minds, a sense of understanding and compassion for others, and the courage to act on their beliefs. Princeton Academy has established itself as an outstanding school for boys that educates the whole child: intellectual, spiritual, moral, social, emotional, and physical. Princeton Academy seeks candidates who believe in the mission of the school.
Preparing young boys for their first steps along their educational journey is the primary goal of Princeton Academy's Lower School program. Princeton Academy has created a program that meets the varied needs of our young gentlemen, steeped in years of gender-based research on how boys learn best, including differentiated learning. The social, academic and physical development of each boy is paramount. Academic programs, based on best practices for boys, have been created to meet Lower School boys' physical and social needs, learning styles and broad interests. Movement is incorporated into the learning environment, making it easy for boys to engage in learning. The result is: they love to come to school.
An inquiry-based approach to science affords our boys the opportunity to develop skills of observation, documentation, data collection and analysis. Research skills evolve as students learn to identify appropriate resources and evaluate the validity of information. Scientific tools and equipment are introduced to boys at age appropriate levels and are described as instruments that assist in the safe and productive facilitation of learning. Making use of our beautiful 50-acre campus, it is not uncommon to find a Lower School science class exploring our lush woods, cultivating our geodesic greenhouse, or venturing through our many fields, all in the spirit of science, exploration and discovery.
Through our research on best practices for boys’ learning, Princeton Academy utilizes the Singapore Math program as the guidepost of our Lower School math curriculum. The Singapore Math program provides a scope and sequence for our boys to work with number concepts using manipulatives, models, measuring instruments and other tools leading to symbolic real-world applications. Our aim is to equip boys with sound concept development, critical thinking and efficient problem-solving skills.
Interested candidates should have three or more years teaching experience with a background in math and/or science. Candidates should have experience in a lower school (K-4) or middle school (5-8) setting. A strong belief in the mission and vision of Princeton Academy, the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria and Princeton Academy’s Learning Principles for Boys are essential. The position requires clear collaboration and communication with the Grade 4 teaching team, which includes a Lead ELA and Social Studies teacher and a Classroom Teaching Assistant. A background in lesson planning and unit mapping that delivers a clear scope and sequence is necessary.
