Lower School Math Specialist Beginning Late August 2018
The principle role of the math specialist is to teach small groups of 2-6 students from the same grade level who need extra support or enrichment/challenge work. Each rotation, the math specialist will plan and teach 1-2 periods with each of the three classes per grade level, as well as 1-3 enrichment periods. In addition, the math specialist will work with students who are exempt from taking a language class. The small support and enrichment groups are fluid and will be determined by the homeroom teacher and the math specialist. The math specialist is also responsible for determining when students need individual support and, at those times, should schedule time to see students before, during, or after school. On occasion, the math specialist may model lessons for teachers during whole-class lessons.
The math specialist is responsible for mentoring and collaborating with homeroom teachers in Grades 1-4 by meeting with teachers monthly to discuss the curriculum, to share information, to provide resources, and to discuss assessments/tests, including the CTPs. Therefore, the math specialist should consistently research math apps and websites, professional development opportunities, and best resources for teachers.
The math specialist regularly communicates and meets with teachers, parents, administrators, and the Support Services Team. The math specialist will participate in Parent-Teacher Conferences as needed to offer advice and report on student progress. During Support Services Team meetings, the math specialist is responsible for taking notes.
The math specialist will meet with members of the Math Department across the divisions throughout the year to discuss the curriculum and plan special math events, such as math mornings with parents, All School Math Day activities, parent information nights, and math field trips.
The math specialist must have a Master’s Degree in elementary education, at least three years of head teaching and experience with Singapore Math. The math specialist will be working with students in Grades 1-4.
