Suffolk University is seeking qualified candidates to consider for the Academic Tutor position for Upward Bound Program . Upward Bound (UB) at Suffolk University is a federally funded program under the Department of Education that seeks to increase college access and educational opportunities for first-generation and/or low-income students. Our focus is on college acceptance and attendance, and all students are supported through graduation from high school.
Under the direction of the Associate Director, the primary role of the Academic Tutor is to assist in the advisement of students regarding their academic performance and test preparation materials. This role will require individual tutoring and classroom instruction (test preparation).
Assist students reaching their full academic potential by providing support in all academic related work including homework, classwork, and study skills.
Develop weekly class materials related to the preparation of MCAS and/or SATs.
Maintain accurate records including attendance and service logs.
Assist Upward Bound staff with other student related tasks.
Attend staff meetings.
Counsels, supervises and monitors students during advisory block as well as after school to assist with high school level academic learning.
Conducts individual and small group tutorials.
Meets with Instructor to assess students' academic needs.
May assist with and contribute to the preparation of class material and student reports.
Serves as a mentor to students and conducts one activity daily.
May assist in chaperoning cultural activities
Develop curriculum for a weekly test prep class related to MCAS or SAT Critical Reading, SAT Writing or SAT Math Test Prep
Enforces and abides by the Upward Bound rules and regulations.
Performs additional tasks as required
Bachelor's degree in either Mathematics, Science or related STEM field and high school level professional instruction experience required
Demonstrated experience working with high school age students (preferably first generation, low income, and/or English Language Learners)
Ability to coordinate student activities and classroom lesson plans
Knowledge of test-taking and study skills
Ability to work independently with diverse groups
Familiarity and comfort with all major subject areas
Ability to assist others in understanding concepts
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with target population.
Demonstrated professionalism and maturity
Hours of Work
Academic tutoring would take place in Dorchester at a public school Hours could be flexibility within Monday, Wednesday or Thursday.
