The Math & Science Center Supervisor is responsible for managing the daily operations and activities of the Math, Science, Engineering and Business services in the Academic Success Center. As well as supervising the center staff/tutor and services. In addition, the incumbent in this position is responsible for assisting in maintaining the center budget, creating and increasing the effectiveness of the center's programs, and participating in outreach and marketing initiatives. The incumbent designs, implements, manages, and evaluates student support activities/services/programs for the Alexandria Campus to promote academic success in STEM subjects, specifically Math.
Description of Duties and Tasks:
Supervise all operations and daily activities in the STEM services of the Academic Success Center, including but not limited: supervise tutors, tutor training and development, tutoring programs/math lab, other learning support programming, academic coaching and workshop facilitation. Work with supervisor (Coordinator of the Academic Success Center) to assess the effectiveness of the center's services. Hire and train all tutors and lab assistants. Evaluate staff in operational procedures and content/skill areas. Work with Math, Science, Technology and Business (MSTB) faculty to stay abreast of curricula and learning objectives. Work with supervisor to track and maintain the center's budget. Participate in the grant writing process to obtain new resources. Track and inventory center supplies. Participate in marketing activities and conduct orientation sessions for students & faculty. Participate in Division meetings and other initiatives for students and faculty. This position may be required to work some evenings and weekends. Responsible for selection, hiring, training and supervision of paid and volunteer tutors. Track client and tutoring needs. Coordinate with faculty to identify learning and instruction challenges. Develop and monitor quality assessment of tutoring services. Maintain records of client needs, client progress and learning outcomes. Work with other campus units to carry out variety of student support projects and initiatives. Explain mathematics subject matter to students in the ASC’s Math lab in triage tutoring environment. Demonstrate and teach the use of mathematics and graphics software to individual students and groups. This position will be a part of a team of Learning Specialists within the Academic Success Center and report the the Coordinator of the Academic Success Center.
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelors Degree in Mathematics, Science, Education, or related field, or equivalent applicable experience or training. Experience managing staff and programs in education.
Graduate degree in a math or science related field with significant experience working in higher education in a supervisor capacity, or a comparable role. Experience teaching math and/or science courses in higher education. Experience working with diverse populations with a variety of learning needs. Higher education experience, preferably community college. Experience with student study skill development. Experience in a tutoring and/or teaching setting. Ability to work productively with faculty.
