The Institute for Collaborative Education is seeking several motivated candidates to join our teaching staff in the fall of 2019. We are seeking individuals experienced in or interested in project-based assessment and working with a diverse mix of children in grades 6 through 12. Teaching at ICE, as anywhere, is demanding and rewarding but in our community teachers are given significant trust and freedom to design curriculum that feels intellectually exciting to them and will inspire creativity and innovation in your colleagues.
Teachers should have strong content knowledge, and a passion for working with kids. We put kids first in our school - so an interest in empowering kids by creating open and safe spaces is a must. Teachers work very closely with each other so previous experience working in collaborative environments like camps, clubs and other organizations are always helpful.
About Institute for Collaborative Education
The Institute for Collaborative Education is a small school for students in 6th through 12th grades. I.C.E. is a magnet school where we screen students for affinity to collaborative learning and a desire for intense collaboration and community. Our students come from very diverse backgrounds and represent all identities imaginable across race/ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, academic skills and interests. Our academic program focuses on inquiry-driven instruction and project-based assessment using tasks that are authentic to each discipline. As a member of the New York State Performance Standards Consortium ICE is able to assess student proficiency using Performance Based Assessment Tasks in lieu of the mandated state tests. PBATs are long term projects that demand background research, unique arguments and strategies, use of evidence, data analysis and extensive writing and revision.
Teachers at I.C.E. are given great freedom, and must be comfortable designing their own curriculum so that their students develop the skills and habits required for the completion of these college level graduation requirements. All faculty advise a cohort of students whom they also teach. W...e use the detailed knowledge of our students’ strengths and weaknesses to design our academic program to be demanding for each individual according to their abilities. ICE teachers and students are given increased freedom as well as increased responsibility in running our dynamic school community. As a teacher here you will be expected to collaborate with several teams to monitor student progress, design curriculum, and engage in inquiry into best instructional practices.
