We are seeking a dynamic, experienced fourth grade teacher, whose classroom responsibilities will focus on the teaching of math and history. Fourth grade marks the transition point from our Lower School to our Middle School division. The fourth grade teaching responsibilities are shared between two teachers who divide curriculum by language arts and this math/history position.
Fourth grade math seeks to reinforce automaticity around arithmetic, while promoting new material with a focus on the application of those new understandings. The history content focuses on Connecticut state history as well as an intensive, interdisciplinary unit on Egypt and ancient history. For both disciplines, employing student-centered teaching methods is of critical importance, with a focus on the development of key skills across the disciplines. In addition to the primary responsibilities in the classroom, fourth grade teachers serve as homeroom teachers, who closely collaborate to support the social and emotional development of the students.

A passion for teaching math and history, while utilizing a range of pedagogical approaches necessary to support middle-level learners in their development as readers and writers
An approach to teaching that provides students with opportunities and support in the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, the exploration of ideas, and the development of leadership qualities
Solid organization, communication and writing skills
Excellent classroom management skills
Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team with the desire to collaborate across disciplines
Teaching style that supports an understanding of and respect for students’ individual learning styles
Desire for personal and professional growth as Middle School teacher
Demonstrated ability to maintain a climate of trust and mutual respect, which encourages students to risk asking questions, expressing their opinions, and making mistakes necessary to learning process

Education & Experience
Three to five years of middle school teaching experience with a focus on math and history
A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree preferred
