Upward Bound is currently seeking a Math Summer instructor with secondary school certification or graduate students to teach five weeks in the Summer Academy at Harris-Stowe State University. The program is hiring instructors to teach high school level Math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra 11 or Pre-calculus/Calculus). The program works to prepare students to have the skills they need to succeed in high school and college. The Upward Bound Summer Academy is not a traditional summer school, but rather a learning community where students expand their mind, gain independence, and participate in a simulated college experience.
- Conduct an integrated academic math class (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-calculus/Calculus) class, - Teach students learning strategies, - Conduct teaching and instructional activities using educational equipment, manipulative objects, props and other learning aids, - Prepare and submit a course outline prior to the start of the class, - Assist with the planning, instruction and evaluation of tutoring and problem solving activities, - Complete paperwork associated with classroom and project management, - Make recommendations on students' strength and needs, - Report student learning and behavioral issues to the appropriate staff personnel
Note: This is a temporary position beginning June 23, 2019 – July 27, 2019.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- An earned Bachelor's degree in a related acceptable field from an accredited university. - Teaching and/or counseling experience – high school and/or through college. - Demonstrated expertise in teaching/ counseling the target population (high school 9-12th grades). - Ability to plan and coordinate activities, as well as being able to relate to people in a positive way. - Able to conduct classes in an interesting, fun and productive learning environment. - Regular, consistent attendance is mandatory, excellent communication, written and verbal skills.
The successful candidate will also possess the dispositions of professionalism, competence, reflection, and the ability to work with diverse populations of students, faculty, and community partners. This individual must be a team player and adhere to policy, procedures, and timelines.
