Job Description | Green Acres School is seeking a part- or full-time teacher of math and science to lower and middle school students The science responsibilities could be middle school-only, or they could stretch as low as 1st grade, depending on the qualities and background of the successful candidate. The math position is one section of 5th grade. Because we are also hiring another science teacher, this position has the potential to be as small as 50% or it could be full-time, depending on the skills and availability of the successful candidates.The successful candidate will have an approach to each discipline that encourages deep knowledge and conceptual fluency.
The successful candidate as a math teacher will have an approach that cultivates a high degree of math fluency and problem-solving by balancing an established and successful scope and sequence with interesting and engaging projects. We believe that students are most successful when their ability to “speak and write math” is cultivated alongside their ability to solve problems showing their work. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of how math creates models of our world, and she or he will incorporate that understanding by teaching math not just as abstract problems and theory, but also as it explains and illustrates the world around us.
The successful candidate will get students doing science. We believe deeply in a hands-on approach to learning, and we engage students in the study of science though a study of the real world around them. Kids are on their feet, working in groups, creatively problem-solving, and exercising the skills of active learning. They go on nature walks, study the creek that runs through our property, build and launch rockets, participate in a disease outbreak simulation, and design disaster-proof houses. Green Acres has also embraced the Maker movement, and our curriculum in the late elementary and middle school years engages students actively in coding, robotics and 3D printing. Green Acres has an ongoing focus on environmental stewardship that includes gardening, environmental exploration and study, and our certification as an MAEOE Green School. All in all, we want to inspire our students within the boundaries of every discipline, and we hope to find a science teacher whose creative approach to the real world can inspire kids to explore and imagine scientifically while also presenting them with a strong foundation of disciplined scientific thought and knowledge.
Across areas, the successful candidate will have the capacity to meet the needs of a range of learners in a relatively heterogeneous setting. It is likely that the candidate will also serve as a student advisor, engaging students in social-emotional learning as well as acting as a liaison between advisee families and the school. He or she will accompany students as a chaperone on overnight trips of 3-5 days once or twice a year.

Requirements | Green Acres seeks an experienced classroom teacher who has a background in curricular and pedagogical innovation, with teaching experience relevant to this position. The successful candidate will possess the following capacities: a sincere love of working with tweens and children, a passion for math and science, a love of teaching, curiosity and a growth mindset, the ability to provide differentiated instruction, and an interest in integrating technology into the curriculum. A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
