Saint Mark’s school is an independent, Episcopal coeducational day school in Altadena, California. Founded in 1960, the school serves the needs of approximately 300 Preschool through Sixth grade students from diverse ethnic, racial, religious and economic backgrounds. The School’s mission is to develop the unique intellect and character of each student in a nurturing environment committed to academic excellence, respect for diversity, responsibility, and spiritual growth.
The school is seeking a high energy, well organized math teacher who has proven success at the elementary or middle school level. The 5th and 6th grade math teacher will be responsible for working to deepen students' understanding of mathematical concepts including but not limited to: number sense, multiplication, division of whole numbers, addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, algebra, geometry and spatial sense, measurement, and functions and probability.
The ideal candidate will be able to incorporate several styles of teaching and use varied approaches within a responsive classroom framework. Qualified candidates should demonstrate a passion for teaching pre-adolescents, a growth mindset, flexibility, a commitment to ongoing professional development, strong communication skills, an ability to work as part of a team, and the skills to engage and inspire students. The job also includes participation on an education field study experience including a multiple day overnight trip to Washington State or Washington D.C.
While job duties vary, the math teacher is primarily responsible for collaborating with grade level content area teachers, partnering with enrichment faculty and support staff, planning and implementing innovative and interdisciplinary project-based lessons, evaluating student work, and effective verbal and written communication with students, parents, administrators, and local area independent schools.
California Multiple Subject or Single Subject Teaching Credential
Minimum of five years full-time teaching experience at the elementary or middle school level

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

Working collaboratively and as a mentor to the team of teacher interns that work with the 5/6th team

Maintaining a neat, clean, and comfortable classroom atmosphere that inspires and exhibits student learning.
Conferencing with parents as needed and particularly whenever there is special concern that warrants discussion between parents and teachers.
Supervising children in the classroom and on the playground in a manner that is conducive to the highest possible safety standards. This includes the responsibility to remain with the children, as needed, in the event of an emergency (earthquake, fire, etc.)
Serving on committees, assisting with parent education nights, helping with admission events and other community needs.
Arriving promptly at the assigned time and leaving only upon completion of daily tasks.
Attending all designated staff meetings and school/Parent Association programs.
Student advocacy via written recommendations for 6th graders matriculating to middle school.
Completing other tasks and projects as assigned by school administration.
Physical Abilities: Jobs include some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stopping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; hearing, speaking, observing and significant fine finger dexterity. Specific abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Generally, the job requires 15% sitting, 40% walking and 45% standing and the ability to life or move up to 50 pounds. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and in a clean atmosphere.
