Upward Bound Math Science Residential Assistant Summer 2020 (Seasonal) - Mount Wachusett Community College

General Statement of Duties

The UBMS Residential Assistants (RAs) provide supervision, guidance and support as well as academic enrichment and recreational programming to summer program participants. Day RAs (5 positions) will work with students during the day and evening. Night RAs (2 positions) will work with students in the late evening and supervise dormitory overnight.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily supervision to high school students participating in pre-college residential program.
• Mentor and support low income, first generation high school students in college preparation activities.
• Lead students through small group activities.
• Develop and facilitate enrichment curriculum of cultural, co-curricular and recreational programming.
• Assist students with academic projects and tutor students in core content subjects
• Chaperone student outings and college visits.
• Proactively communicate student needs and concerns to program administrators and fellow residential assistants.
• Collaborate with other RAs to create and supervise large group activities.
• Maintain adequate grant documentation, including attendance records, incident reports, and sign out logs.
• Conduct evening rounds in 30-minute intervals documenting any student or staff incidents after lights out (night RAs only).
• Other duties as assigned by the recruitment counselor, assistant director or director.

Minimum Requirements

• Must be able to pass a comprehensive Criminal Offender Record Investigation;
• Must reside on Fitchburg State University campus while summer program is in session;
• Enrollment in or recent completion of an AA/AS/BS/BA program.
• Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to participants and parent/guardians.

Skills, Knowledge and Aptitudes

• Sensitivity and maturity level to successfully work in a residential program with high school aged students;
• Desire to help disadvantaged youth succeed;
• Ability to interact with diverse constituencies including program personnel, Fitchburg State University personnel, parents/guardians and students.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience participating in a TRIO program such as Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math & Science, Talent Search or similar pre-college program;
• Experience in tutoring in college-level math and science course and/or conducting college level  math and science research;
• Experience as a collegiate residential assistant
• Minimum of two years' work experience with low-income, disadvantaged and/or minority youth.

Preference for candidates who are from low-income and first generation backgrounds and/or are bilingual or bicultural.

Salary: Compensation is $3200.00 for entire program (Grant Funded)

Residential Assistant appointment  from June 29, 2020- August 14, 2020 at Fitchburg State University Campus. Room and Board is included (Meals include Monday Lunch-Friday Lunch). Must reside on FSU campus Monday-Friday. Admission to cultural trips also included for RAs attending those trips as chaperones.
