Founded in 1883, Allen-Stevenson is a K-9 independent school for boys with an enrollment of 408 students. Located in the heart of New York City’s Upper East Side, the School is a joyful, inclusive community. Our urban setting affords many educational and cultural advantages. The School seeks a math teacher to teach math to middle school grade levels and to work collaboratively with a team of math teachers across the disciplines beginning in September 2020. This is a full-time position and is eligible for a complete benefits package.
The math department seeks to deepen students’ conceptual understanding through a range of experiences, including weekly problem-solving challenges that require students to support their work and explain it through written reflection. The program strives to incorporate best practices through a concept-based curriculum. Current related K-9 program initiatives include social-emotional learning, social/environmental justice, inquiry, robotics, and STEAM.
Allen-Stevenson is at a very exciting period in its growth. Among other initiatives, the School is in the middle of a transformative building expansion project, which is to be completed in Fall 2021.
Primary responsibilities include:
Teach a range of math classes, Grades 4 - 8
Demonstrate familiarity with NCTM standards and how they align with your teaching approach
Demonstrate a commitment to working with students as they make connections across the disciplines through their mathematics study
Be willing to be a part of a collaborative team as the math program continues to develop
Use a variety of approaches to problem-solving, including inquiry-based methods and modeling practical applications
Offer feedback to students on the clarity of their solutions and the quality of their written work
The ideal candidate will:
Have at least 1-3 years of elementary and/or middle school math teaching experience
Have a degree in math or a related field
Show effective classroom management skills
Be a collaborative team player
Be committed to equity, diversity and inclusion
Have the ability to differentiate curriculum and meet the needs of a variety of learners
