Overview of Position
This position is for an 8th grade math associate teacher, beginning August 2020. This teacher will report to the Middle School Division Head and will work in close collaboration with the Lead 8th Grade Math Teacher and the 8th grade team. This is a full time teaching position.
Responsibilities of Job
Assist in teaching Illustrative Mathematics Curriculum, a problem-based, student-centered, common-core-aligned program to the entire 8th grade of approximately 72 students
Be responsible for managing and supporting an in-person group of 12 students or a digital group of 18 students after the lead teacher has presented the main instruction for a given class period
Help teach both in a distance learning model and an on-campus model
Support and teach students in small groups and 1on1
Serve on the 8th grade team with ongoing collaboration with other grade team members.
Collaborate with the other math teachers to ensure a cohesive mathematics program across the whole middle school
Effectively communicate with a diverse parent body
Participate in parent/teacher conferences
Support advisories by occasionally leading activities, subbing, or co-leading advisory sessions.
Support advisories by being present during study halls to work with students
Appreciation for and desire to work with middle school-aged students
Understanding of the development of middle school-aged students
Familiarity with middle school math education
Understanding that all student learn differently and require different types of support to succeed
Ability to create a safe and joyful learning environment that fosters a growth-mindset class culture
Knowledge of the essential role social and emotional literacy plays in the workplace and interest in application of SEL within the educational setting
Knowledge of identity-safe and anti-bias educational practices and ability to create an inclusive classroom community that allows for a multitude of perspectives to be heard and respected
Ability to take initiative, work passionately and joyfully, and collaborate effectively with diverse constituencies
In addition to required qualifications, desirable additional skills include:
Familiarity with Illustrative Mathematics Curriculum
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Excellent interpersonal skills
Organizational skills and the ability to multitask
Knowledge of educational technology to support teaching and learning
Nuanced understanding of DEI/social justice knowledge from a personal or programmatic perspective
Duties school-wide include:
Ancillary duties include responsibilities that are part of middle school life, e.g., team and staff meetings, attendance at school functions, recess duties, etc.
