PHYSICS & MATH TEACHER 

Barrie School seeks candidates for the 2021-2022 school year for the position of Physics & Math Teacher, with employment beginning on August 20, 2021. 

Established in 1932, Barrie School is one of the most diverse and progressive independent schools in the country. The essential focus of the school is to cultivate excellence, intrinsic motivation, and responsibility in students through an innovative and collaborative approach to education. Barrie School currently serves 300+ students in three divisions: Lower School (with a Montessori approach for students ages 1st to 5th grade) and a project based approach for Middle School (6th to 8th grade) and Upper School (9th to 12th grade).

The institution is home to the Barrie Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies -- one of the largest school based training institutes for aspiring teachers in the country -- and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500+ families each summer.

ABOUT THE POSITION & QUALIFICATIONS

Barrie Middle & Upper School (grades 6-12) is seeking a Physics & Math Teacher for the 2021-2022 academic year. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of teaching experience and a passion for both physics and math. While the position is for teaching ninth grade Physics and Geometry, Barrie Middle and Upper School serves students in grades six through twelve. Thus, the selected candidate might serve as an adviser to middle school students or possibly teach middle school courses in the future.

In addition, he or she will value project-based learning as a means to engage students meaningfully in real-world and twenty-first century experiences. As part of the freshman conceptual Physics program, students go to NASA Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama where they spend a week learning about what it takes to be an astronaut. Our Barrie math program is inquiry-based with a focus on problem-based learning. Juniors and seniors may take AP Calculus, AP Statistics, or, if they are advanced, Multivariable Calculus. 

Responsibilities

All time scheduled on campus for classes and duties as described below will approximate a full teacher’s load at Barrie Prep.

• Teach two sections of Physics to ninth grade students.
• Teach two sections of Geometry to ninth grade students.
• Provide inspiration and support for faculty and students in developing and implementing new innovative learning opportunities.
• Serve as adviser for six to twelve students.
• Run an Extended Study Week (ESW) program in the spring each academic year.
• Perform supervisory and substitute duties as needed in the middle and upper school (i.e. study period, lunch duty, bus duty, car circle, sub-on-call).
• Fully participate in the life of the middle and upper school.
